A Very Large Spawning Aggregation of a Deep-Sea Eel: Magnitude and Status

Multiple lines of evidence substantiate the existence a very large aggregation basketwork eel, Diastobranchus capensis, on small (3 km2) Patience Seamount off southeast Australia. The appears to be present year-round, but largest in austral autumn when composed spawning eels. Twenty eels caught April 2015 (14 female, 6 male) were all advanced stages condition. eel’s abundance was high as measured at seamount, local and regional scales. Hydroacoustic measurement aggregation’s dimensions (~100 × 1000 m) conservative counts 100 s along camera transects ~1000–2000 m length indicate 10,000 individual may have been present. absence other known locations indicates is regional-scale spatial anchor for spawning. protected marine park 2007 following decades-long impact from bottom trawling, indicating that population can expected stabilise recover. Monitoring status, validating seasonal spawning, provide important opportunities examine conservation-led recovery deep sea part Australia’s new national strategy Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting Improvement (MERI) conservation values within parks.
